Enveloped by a scenery of snow-capped mountains, rivers fed by glaciers and alpine forests topping up high to the sky, the journey to Kedarnath is an exercise in reaching a divine pilgrimage destination as it is a self-discovery process.

This blog covers everything there is to know about Kedarnath – right from its mythological history and pilgrimage value, to how to plan a trip, best time to visit and what to expect when you set out on your spiritual trail.

Mythological Significance; Mythology and Religion

Kedarnath Travel Guide 2025

Kedarnath is also a part of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the most sacred abodes of Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, the Pandavas built the temple after the Kurukshetra war. Pleading for forgiveness to Lord Shiva for having killed their kith and kin, they roamed into the Himalayas.

Shiva dunked them and manifested himself as a bull to escape them. When Bhima attempted to seize the animal, it disappeared into the ground and its parts emerged at various places. The hump descended in Kedarnath, where emerged out its sacred temple. The other limbs arose at the remaining four locations in the Panch Kedar—Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar.

The temple is thought to have been originally constructed by the Pandavas, and is said to have been renovated by Adi Shankaracharya during the 8th century. It is more than a monument — it is a living shrine, imbued with a 5,000-year history of devotion.

The temple, built of large, heavy slabs of stone, is also in North Indian style. For centuries the temple has weathered strong Himalayan winds and other natural elements such as earthquakes and floods. In the sanctum sanctorum is a conical rocky formation, which is worshipped as the Sadashiva form of Lord Shiva.

One of the most interesting facets of the temple’s construction is that it has remained standing during natural disasters, the most notable being the 2013 floods in Uttarakhand. Although all the vicinity had been heavily damaged, the temple building was relatively unharmed—because of “the protection of Heaven,” according to many.
